Rae is a sculptor, poet, and co-owner of Assembly Arts in Lancaster

“My work explores identity. I examine the ways in which stories we tell ourselves influence our own identity: Memories from childhood. Genetic inheritance. Scars. I’m interested in the way that mothers and grandmothers pass down their bodies, and their body of knowledge. I’m interested in the secret languages created between sisters. I look at how we can enjoy, preserve and honour these relationships and stories through a range of mediums including free form writing, poetry, mark making and sculpture. My 3D work uses found objects and natural fibres, but I specialise in ceramics, enjoying the tactile nature of clay.

I’m currently developing a language based around text gestures and learning dressmaking skills, in order to explore the idea of secretly wearing these markers of identity. I’m looking to see what is revealed, and what is kept hidden.”
